HEY! We are Sarah Teale and Georgia Affonso and we are No Door Theatre. After meeting each other rom-com style on a particularly blustery day in Manchester, we discovered we shared a love of theatre, comedy and our birthday (FATE ALERT!). We were also both exhausted from the only roles being offered in student drama shows reading something like ‘pretty girl who is also clever (!)’, ‘funny girl who is just one of the lads’ and the simple but award-winning ‘abuse victim’ SO we decided to take matters into our own hands and start writing parts that we would actually want to audition for.
Since then, we have made impeccable theatre, with no mistakes, mishaps or tears by the bins of Revs, Edinburgh …. LOL JK. No Door Theatre is named after an oversized prop door which cost an entire student-theatre budget and towered over actors for a whole production when it was only meant to be in one scene. We are learning as we go, and No Door has become a space for us, and other writers, to try out, experiment and develop ourselves as artists.
No Door Theatre aims to produce theatre with a majority of women’s voices onstage. We want it to be challenging and provocative, but we also want you to have a good time watching it, we want you to laugh, cry, and enjoy your pint.
Who we are
Sarah Teale
Sarah is a writer physically based in London but emotionally based in Manchester (where she grew up and studied). She has had work performed at Southwark Playhouse, Theatre503, and the Central School of Speech and Drama, as well as No Door Theatre (obvs). Since moving to London Sarah been learning with Cardboard Citizens as a regular freelancer, and undertaken an internship at the Arcola Theatre. Sarah has also worked with a range of writer/performers, and as an independent director for established theatre companies.
No Door Theatre are currently developing Sarah’s new play about grief in a non-nuclear family. Previously, Sarah has produced Runway, written and directed An Evening with the Voices in Annie’s Head which toured to Edinburgh Fringe, and directed Forgive-Me-Not, as well as produced/directed/written/done the lighting/bought the snacks for our scratch nights Superwoman, Bobbyknockers and Girl Ish.
Georgia Affonso
Georgia Affonso is a Manchester-based writer and theatre maker, originally from Oxfordshire. Recently, she was selected for BBC Drama Room 2021/22 and was previously part of BBC Northern Voices 2019. Georgia recently became an emerging mentor as part of CORE2 for The Writing Squad (Arts Council NPO), a development scheme for young writers based or from the North. Georgia was selected for the Waterloo Road Shadow Scheme in 2022 and her short radio play Adulting was produced for The Verb, BBC Radio 3. Georgia works as a theatre facilitator with companies including DIY Theatre, Manchester Camerata, The Lowry, OmniMusic and The Writing Squad.
No Door Theatre toured Georgia’s play Runway to Oxford Playhouse (BT Studio) as part of Offbeat Festival, Southwark Playhouse and the Martin Harris Centre in Manchester. Runway was longlisted for Theatre503 Playwriting Award 2018 and the Alfred Bradley Bursary Award (BBC). Georgia also produced ‘An Evening with the Voices in Annie’s Head’, wrote Forgive-Me-Not and wrote/produced/directed/scrambled actors/found a money box for our scratch nights Superwoman, Bobbyknockers and Girl Ish.
